Pittsburg, Contra Costa County
Pittsburg has had three names. It was founded in 1849 as New York of the Pacific, became Black Diamond when coal from nearby mines was shipped from its wharves, and took its present name in 1911 after a steel mill opened on the waterfront. Steel was made or finished here for more than a century.
